Just been out to check my hens and both are making a purring sound...does not sound chesty/rattly.  They are both standing still in the hen house and neither look very happy, perhaps a little puffed...difficult to tell tbh.  Threw some mealworms out in the run to coax them out but neither came.  Wormed them just last week with flub too, so don't think it could be gape worm.  They have eaten some of their food today, but not much.  Any ideas?

Sometimes they will puff up to trap warmer air to keep warm and it sounds like its their normal contentment sound. You often hear them doing it of an evening after they have been locked into the coop.

I hope so, they are acting really weird.  Just been out again and shook the mealworm tub, which normally gets them hurtling out the coup, and they didn't budge.  The youngest is still making the weird sound...sort of a mix between a purr and growl.. off and on, has her tail slighty down and seems to be moving slower than usual.

OK, you haven't got mice or even rats about have you? I've heard mine make a growly noise when there has been a mouse around.

Pick one up and put your ear to its back and listen.
If you can hear some gurgly wheezy noises then its prob some sort of respiratory problem.

Hi Christine,

Yep, have recently had rats around. Laid bait in secure box outside of run last week, only seen around 3 rats this week.  They are not laying yet.

Cuckoomad,

Climbed in the run and listened to the girls chests they seem fine, no rattling or gurgling.

Both hens have eaten a little and drunk a fair bit of water this afternoon.  My eldest daughter went up to check on them around 3pm, both were in the coup but came hurtling out went she went up clucking for treats as normal.  She said she did not hear them making any strange noises.  However, I put them to bed about 10 minutes ago and the youngest was chirping and it sounded a bit hoarse.  Both had their tails up though.  Very weird!!!!

Hi Christine,

Both hens are fine, bright and perky.  Really cannot figure out what went on yesterday.  Haven't heard them make that sound at all...weird!

Caught two rats in the rat trap as well in the last 12 hours... and one mouse in the trap in the kitchen...

Thats good news. I do wonder if they spotted one of those rats! I bet you're glad they've gone.

Very pleased they have gone. Caught third rat yesterday, nothing today nor have I seen one lurking in the shadows...so I am guessing the ones I haven't caught have either scoffed the poison and carped it or scarpered!!
