Is there a safe way to clip hens toe nails

Its a bit like clipping dogs nails....carefully, as if you clip too low they will bleed. You can use dog nail clippers on the birds. If the hens are out scratching around they will keep their nails naturally short enough.

If you go down the clipping route you wil need two people one to hold, one to clip. Before you start to trim have some flour or cornflour handy if you need to stop any bleeding, it stems bleeding quickly.If the nail is clear you should be able to see the vein and be able to avoid clipping too low.

If you are taking on ex batts they often have their nail trimmed on release by the organisers. If this hasn't happened, as a rule of thumb cut the part of the nail that has started to curl.
